capper for Pietta 1858

Would someone who uses a capper on their .44 cal Pietta 1858 New Army, please tell me what brand you use?

The cappers that I used on my Walker don't seem to want to work on the Pietta.

A lot of guys have trouble using standard cappers on their Remmie revolvers. Most resort to hand capping and some resort to modifying the cylinder to allow use of a capper.

I use the Traditions one on mine.
It almost works quite well, but there is a little modification you can do to make it work more smoothly. I went with the "Modify the cheapest part" method so I didn't want to make alterations to the gun.

The TC Star Capper will fit but stills requires using your fingers to fill it with caps one at a time.

None of the four cappers I use for various C&Bs and other guns fit the Pietta 1858. I finally said to heck with it and put them on with my fingers. A bit of a challenge (big, thick fingers) but it works and the accuarcy of that Pietta makes it worth the effort.

You know, that makes sense, my fingers aren't big, I am a skinny guy, so I might just forget the capper and do the same thing. :bow:

:v Ted Cash makes a capper that works fine on mine. His products are available at most anyplace that carries supplies for Bp shooters. :v

Dale, the New Armys sometimes require a bit of...err..machining to the capper and/or nipple cutouts. I prefer to do all my grinding on the capper, myself. I guess it depends on how much the factory has already hogged out your nipple cutouts. My straight-line capper needed very little modification. Take the cylinder out, lay it flat on it's face, then try the capper while it's staring you in the face (instead of trying to finagle it on the gun). Shouldn't take much filing. If it does, you may have to widen or square-off your cutouts.
I don't recommend "fingers-only" though I've done it. :nono: I saw a very nasty post of a guy's thumb that was missing a chunk from a chamber that fired while capping...it was not pretty. :shake:

I find that cappers are alot like nipple wrenches. YOu got to have a million of them. I have snail shaped, straight line, curved, brass, plastic, gravity fed, spring fed. Sheesh too da*n many. And each pistol takes a different kind it seems. Now for my Remington I have a dedicated straight line. Actually it's getting to the point I label or store wrenches, and cappers with the gun that fits it. I put them both in a nice white draw string bag with the gun info written on it in marker. Hey they only cost a few bucks each which is a pittance compared to the cost of the gun. Easy to grab when I go to the range or a civ war event, I just toss the bag into the range box or my backpack and go. It 's the same with the holsters. 16 guns and about 10 holsters. Some guns fit in some and some don't fit. So I label those also No more spending 15 minutes finding which gun fits what. And I won't even get into color of holsters- Some are brown (confed mid to late war) some are black (confed and fed) What a fun time we live in. Choices we have soo many choices.

:v Well I took some pictures and got them to photobucket but can't seem to follow directions to get it posted here. In any case I thought your post was for a 58 Pieta Remington, but now I don't know. Iam using a straight rifle capper by Ted Cash, not the snail or teardrop type, they are in brass or oxided steel. :idunno: :redface:

I've heard people say "you can't use a capper with a Remington Revolver" but I guess I've owned a good half dozen Remington type revolvers over the years and never had any problem using the Ted Cash snail capper with them. If I modified the capper it was long ago, I don't remember, but I use that capper with every cap lock I own.

1) the word 'albums' is misspelled
2) you have to select a single picture at a time; the use of the '?start=all' delimiter isn't valid.

I corrected the spelling and replaced '?start=all' with a specific picture: '075.jpg' and it works.

The Possable Shop sells a Remingtion stright line capper. I have never tried one so i don't know how well thay work.
