I use a thick(belt leather thickness) of leather and punch holes in it for caps. See no reason why someone in that time period wouldn't do the same.

Pre-1940 or Pre 1840?

In the mid to late 1830's, caps were the new ignition system and cappers as we know them (to my knowledge) didn't exist outside of making them yourself...

You can make a wonderful capper with heavy leather and a hole punch, cut the leather to any shape that pleases you and punch in the holes along it's edge...

You just got your reply in first while I was making the graphic, it's still a good idea...

To expand on this, I sewn my leather capper to the inside of the flap of my hunting pouch, this helps keep the rain and snow off the caps...

What, ya get rain and snow nback there in Glo Bug land? :: Yea, i remember that from when i was a kid growin' up in Ohio.

Anyone have information on pre '40 cappers?????

Well ifn I was to make my own, I would enlarge the hole of a priming horn and us it as a cap dispenser, this would also protect them from the elements, however they would rattle a bit if you were running, also moderate care must be taken not to overfill it with caps, this way the horn plug won't crush the poppin caps when you replace it.
