I'm new to C&B revolvers. Cimarron said #11s were right for my 1860 (Uberti on line FAQ said #10s). On first outing I took both 10s and 11s. The 11s literally fell off as I fired (not good). The 10s I couldn't get to go on far enough to clear the frame when I rotated the cylinder. I tried pushing on with a dowel and couldn't get them on far enough. Got frustrated and wedged a knife blade point between the frame and cylinder using the flat of the blade to push the #10s on far enough (I know, not very smart). That crushed the caps so the fulminate went into the nipple and wouldn't fire when the hammer struck it. So far I have tried CCIs #10 and 11, and RWS 1075. Is it possible that Remington #10s will work? Yes, I've read here about crimping #11s but there has to be a better way. I can't believe that a company like Uberti with a decent reputation would make a revolver with a nipple that is sized BETWEEN #10 and 11 cap. Will appreciate help and advice.

I had the same problem with an uberti. Took each nipple , put them in a drill and used a file to fit RWS caps. Easy fix!!

Why blame Uberti? I think it's the fault of the caps.

I've measured many caps (and published the data on this forum) showing that cap sizes are essentially a manure shoot. There's no predictable relationship between the sizes or between the brands. And if you get a new batch there's no guarantee that there will be any relationship between that one and the previous one.

You can file the nipples to get those CCI's to fit better; that's a good solution for your current problem. You can also buy new nipples from Treso that will fit No. 11 caps. Whether any of that will still apply with the next batch of caps is anybody's guess.

Your desire to find 'a better way' is laudable but I think in the end you're going to find that pinching the caps is, at least some of the time, the best answer.

Dunno bout Uberti but my Pietta 1860 takes #10 and my 58 Remy takes #11. I prefer CCI for my 58(they fit best) but the only 10's I can get are Remington which work ok on the 60.
Caps are sized different from different companies.

Here's what you need. Replace those stock nipples with Treso nipples. #10 remingtons fit perfectly. I've done this with all my guns and they run perfectly.
NIPPLES

Thanks for the responses. Had not heard of Treso nipples but I have ordered a set of Ampco's that take #11s and are supposed to work well with Uberti's. If those don't work, will try Treso. And yes, I won't use the revolver unless I have tight fit of cap to nipple and will hand crimp if I have to. Have looked for Remington #10s but only cap offered in gun stores in Phoenix area are CCIs. Can anyone suggest website where they are sold (in quantities of less than 1,000). Thanks for the responses and help. Jim

Ampco is a trade name for a type of hardened bronze; Treso is a brand name; their nipples are made of Ampco bronze. If you ordered Ampco nipples they will likely be Treso.

Here's a link to Dixie Gun Works catalog listing of Remington caps.

Mykeal, thanks I've looked at Dixie Gun Works several times but haven't found them. I will try some (even if the Ampcos work)
