I'll wager that it's from a hidden vent hole in the barrel or from a percussion lock vented upward on the blind side of the gun.
I didn't even notice the flintlock cock move.
There could be a hidden hammer, percussion lock or firing pin to shoot off a blank cartridge of some sort.
Whoever was Spock's double as a stuntman sure did take a nice dive after being shot.
Some of the more modern movie makers would have just used the trapdoor rifles. "Hey! It's an old kind of gun. No one will notice."
