I'm really surprised musketman didn't follow up on this one.
Here are a FEW interesting facts about castor oil.
Why would anyone including me care about castor oil?
Because Stumpy used it in that marvelous homebrewed lube he made and I shot 30 shots without cleaning, swabbing, over a two week period in Ohio's worse wet, humid and hot weather. No rust, no corrosion.
His formula included castor oil, so I researched the stuff.
Castor oil, OIL that is, is made from the Castor bean.
The bean is contains a DEADLY TOXIN . It contains ricin (say rye-sin), a protein so deadly that one pound could kill the entire human race.
I millionth of an ounce can kill an adult human!
Well good thing there ain't no ricin in Castor oil, but stay the hell away from the BEAN! It'll kill ya!!! :nono:
Castor oil is the BEST oil ever found that has the properties of protecting and lubricating metal under extreme heat, i.e. friction, as in RACING engines.
Ever hear of Castrol-R racing oil? That's right, castor oil!! ::
Daryl is quite right when he mentions that castor oil is the protective substance added to fuel used in model ariplane engines.
Castor oil has been used for centuries as medicine. Foul tasting, but it seems to have much scientific basis for curing certain ailments from constipation  to arthritis ::.
It may well be the BEST ingredient in Stumpy's witches brew lube. I'm gonna make some up mawself. It would seem that castor oil, beeswax, and Murphy's oil soap is the basics, getting amounts right takes some experimenting.
Castor oil protects the metal even under extreme heat. Beeswax acts as a "body" to give the mix some solidity, Murhpy's is the binder that makes the wax and oil mix.
Now I'm only guessing at that last statement, so someone call me on that ascertion if I'm wrong.( W W W hat! ME WRONG? :curse:)
Castor oil is marvelous stuff.
DON'T EAT THE BEAN!!!)

I have found a reference to castor oil, "Madden Root" and "Seedlac" being used c1800 in the finish of Allentown Pennsylvania longrifles, and much earlier than that as a finish for wood instruments. I haven't proven it is PC for a lube, but I am satisfied it was available pre-1800. (Heck, the Eqyptians preferred it as a lamp oil back when Tut was a pup, but I don't think they travelled this far west (unless you believe Cayse and his cronies). If I had ready sources for sperm whale oil and bear oil I wouldn't have bothered with castor oil, either. Castor oil shares some of the properties of animal oils. I focused on it after noting how well it worked in model airplane engines - even after being exhausted through the combustion chamber and hot muffler it was a clear, pervasive (& tenacious) oil.

Castor Oil will also rid you yard of Moles? Put it in you hose end sprayer and spray your yard..... It gets on their skin and drives then into your neighbors yards.
