This season we took a lot of squirrels from one area. A nut tree grove that was over populated. The young males were castrated by the mother at birth as a way to control the population. We took several adult males missing their "bells" . I ask game warden and he told me the facts I presented. Has anyone here seen this occur? I hunt with a .32 Blue Ridge flinter. Out of 23 squirrels, five males were missing their "bells" . :shocked2:

Oh yes I have seen this before in the Pecan Groves in Alabama. The Dominant male will also castrate a loser of the fight during mating season. :shocked2:

I ain't getting into this arguement because you won't believe me anyhow :nono:. I simply leave you with one little point.... young male squirrels have the ability to pull testicles up into the body cavity where you'll never see 'em :shocked2:

I'm with der forester on this one.....game warden better do some squirrel biological research. Tis a long held myth.

If that game warden was right that would be a good little trick to know.

These were skinned and cleaned, no 'bells' , nuts, balls anywhere. They had all other male equipment.

There's something fishy goin on with them squirrels. There's about 6 on my back patio right now and during every day will be 10 or more come and go, eating the feed I put out. Never see one with gonads and I get a good view as they like to climb on the screened in porch.
I always wondered where all the fully equipped male squirrels hide.

Here is a short passage from "Managing Wildlife On Private Lands In Alabama And The Southeast" published by The Alabama Wildlife Federation in conjunction with Auburn University which without question has the best forestry and wildlife management school in the South.

This is from that part entitled "Managing For Squirrels And Rabbits"...."Male squirrels, known as boars, carry their testicles inside their bodies during the non-breeding periods. This accounts for the notion that some hunters have about young boars being clipped by other dominant squirrels to prevent overpopulation. When the breeding season approaches, the boar's testicled enlarge and become exposed".

So there it is.Accept it for the true fact that it is, or reject it and remain in the dark if you like. Your choice :winking:.

Well..that pretty much sums it up. In the big scheme of things..it really don't matter to me if they let the blue jays tote um for them.

I was raised a quail hunter anyway.

And the myth is disspelled yet again!!!! I wonder how long before it raises it's head?

1st question I always want to ask is, how does the mother squirrel perform this surgery when the young males testicles are both internal and itsy bitsy? Maybe we ought to have female squirrels perform vasectomies if they're that good. Finding and cutting the vas defrens shouldn't be much more challanging for such a talented varmint.

The squirrels in my neck of the woods are carnivorous and are hunters. I'd say that takes balls. :rotf:
