Caywood Trade Rifle?

Guy near me has a caywood trade rifle in LH made by caywood. It has a 54 and 62 smooth bore barrels. I have yet to see it. He's asking $1350.

Any advice?

I can always count on you guys to talk me out of it.

Caywood's lock maker, Mike "Kiwi" Rowe, left him a number of years ago. Kiwi locks were excellent. I have no idea of what is currently being used. So a general statement like yours is subject to qualification.
Caywood's barrels are interchangeable. Meaning same outside diameter on all. A 20 ga. would be much heavier than a 12 ga. Something to consider.

I have an older Caywood smoothbore - also lefty. I really like it. It's a 24 gauge. This is the one with the "Wilson" and "London" markings and the little arrows on it. It handles nicely and shoots well. With a ball, it is very accurate. It is likely my most accurate smoothbore with a ball. Check the fit and try to talk him down a bit. I got mine for a bit less than that, but still ballpark.

I also have a copy of the R. Wilson Chief's gun by Caywood. The lock dates from the Mike Rowe days. And everything others have said about the gun is true to my experience. It's a fine piece.

For a 2-barrel set that is a deal, left-handed no less - which while it may not add a premium, they are rarely seen available used. I think this is the 2nd one I've seen since I bought mine 8+ years ago.

FWIW I will soon be selling my right-handed 62 Caywood Wilson (M Rowe lock) and I wouldn't accept less than $1100 just for the fowler w/ 1 barrel. New it would be almost $2K!
