Which one of CCI #11 Magnum caps or regular RWS #11 caps will provide the hotter/bigger flame in a percussion rifle? Will the difference be significant?

CCI #11 Magnum caps will provide flame of longer duration. Significance? That must be your conclusion.

Hope this helps.

A member was kind enough to FWD a link to an interesting article on this topic. I came to the realization that the RWS caps that I currently am using, marked "1075 Plus", are also magnum caps.

The only RWS caps I'm aware of are magnum. I haven't used CCI in a long time, but I don't remember them being water proof.

Tuff call,
I used to use standard CCI, then switched to CCI mag caps with a noted improvment.
Then tried RWS and noticed another improvement,

Maybe that improvment wasn't in the "hotter/bigger" flame as you call it but just plain reliable ignition,
The RWS made the gun go "boom" much more often than the CCI Mag's.

I bought several bricks of RWS and have been with them since, I'm down to the last 8-9 tins though, that'll get me through this year at least.

Those RWS are amazing in wet and rain!! you can throw them in a cup of water, shake the water off
and they still go BANG!! TRUTH!

No fooling, I took more than one deer in the rain over the years using them.

In 5+ years of shooting CCI # 11 standard caps I have not had any ignition troubles or mis-fires. I have shot on rainy days, no problem. I have one Traditions rifle and one CVA Mountain rifle so they both have the same style breech and ignition chamber. Other rifles may have different issues. Some folks shooting substitute powders have found that magnum caps make a huge difference in ignition consistency.

I will shoot just about all brands on targets in dry wheather with no problems, but for hunting or targets in the rain I use only RWS. :idunno: :idunno:

Thanks to all who responded. It seems to be relatively unanymous that RWS 1075 plus caps are the best ones around. That is what I am using and I will keep using them.

To give some background as to what prompted this query: I got a new rifle last week. It is a used Lyman Trade rifle. When I tested it at the range, I had a few hangfires, although the rifle was not fouled or anything. Upon further investigation, I also came to the realization that the stock nipple had a flash hole that is significantly off of center, when viewed from the bottom. Somehow, the flash channel on that nipple was not drilled straight. When the nipple is installed, the flash hole points to the outside/rear. I suspect that it is the cause of the poor ignition. I have now replaced it with a new Hot Shot nipple.

Some people report accuracy problems with hot caps. These are generally designed for use with hard to light substitute powders.

Why is that Dan?

Couldn't the person having accuracy trouble with hot caps adjust his powder charge?
