This is my GPR hardware. I blued it with BC blue and then used The Works toilet bowl cleaner to remove it. It left this cool gray color. It's shiny after a good scrubbing with 0000 steel wool. Before the steel wool it was matte finished and had already started to brown a purplish color. The barrel is about the same color but not as uniform.
The only thing I messed up on was the stock. I should have used some really dark stain so it wouldn't jive with the hardware.
The only thing I don't like about the GPR kit is the stock. I just don't like the color. This may sound odd but I also don't like the grain. I want it to look more plain like so many original rifles I have seen.

No harm in stripping the stock and restaining it to please you. After all it will outlive you so adjust the color to something you will be pleased with.

The metal looks nice!

idea on your stock....
hows about tinting the tru-oil and applying more?
essentialy, its a varnish. shouldnt be too hard to blend in a darker tint. I know I wouldnt want to remove it, big chore.
I recently built a TC hawken and zonie suggested thinning the BC walnut stain with water. I went real thin, about 2 to 1 water to stain and followed up with 5 coats of tru oil, results were outstanding. darker than most. wish I had iron furniture!

just an idea...

Hmmm interesting. I've got some Minwax special walnut and red oak. Wonder if I can mix it with that?
