how wood a good seal be difficult? right now I am thinking that I will get in contact with a local wood supplier and see what I can get my hands on. at the very least I can try?? I figured I can glue it, nail it and line it in pitch that way I should not have to worry about leaks.this all sounds simple in theory, but it really doesnt seem to complicated in the big picture
Very possible. I think I've heard the same. At any rate, it's the best I've used. They are light in weight, and carry well, if they are not bumping into something else you're carrying.
Yes the cheese box canteen was mainly a NY thing. According to what records that do exist, issuance to the 1st NY consisted of both room and wood canteens. It really depended on what was available at the time as well as documents showing being quantities of both in the same order which would lead me to conclude that even within the same unit soldiers may have had either or issued to them. For the first NY , it appears that the cheese box canteen is widely issued. However I feel that the cheese box is vastly underrepresented as well but... I digress.
I've read the same, that cheese box type were limited to New York or the New England area, but that a similar one, a drum canteen, was used widely in the Continental army.
"both room and wood canteens". Room ok I got lost or you for once used the wrong word (I do that about once a post  ). Is room a kind of canteen? Or did you mean. Drum or sum such?
I just received a catalog from Crazy Crow, they have drum frames like a 9" one for $9.00. Seems that would take a lot of work out of trying to form a round outside. Especially if one was trying to make a canteen.
