What do I have here?
Previously I said it was a Crockett, because it is not my gun, but my Significant other's. So I rarely take it to the range, and they rarely come with me.

I took it out the other day and saw that it was a Cherokee.... Then I was reading about them in another thread and was told that I have a Senena, based on the cap box, but the barrel says Cherokee.
It is .32 cal.

Like I stated in the other thread, Seneca stock with a Cherokee barrel. Had one I took on trade just like it. Senecas came with 27” barrels in 36 or 45 caliber, Cherokees with 25” barrels in 32 or 45 caliber. View attachment 31334
Interesting. Thank you for the old ad. I would love to find her one of those .45 cal drop in barrels.

Just for fun, here's that pic again with the Hawken on top. Senecas below, and Cherokee on the bottom.
I'm on the hunt for a .32 barrel to change with my .45 barrel. Go figure.View attachment 31343

How does the handling compare between the Hawken and the Senecas?
I am looking for a low cost 1st build. I want it to be accessable for the S.O. too, so having a Ballance point closer to the back is important.

Personally I prefer the Seneca stock to the Cherokee stock, I have to mash my cheek into the comb of a Cherokee to get my eye aligned with the sights. That doesn’t happen with a Seneca.

The balance point on the Hawken is approximately right at the back of the rear sight. Very centered. The Seneca and Cherokee are almost exactly the same. The weights are quite a bit different though.
I'd go with the Hawken for hunting because I've read that the thin stock on the Seneca might crack under hunting loads.

Do you have light strike issues with your Cherokee or Senena?

Maybe it is my caps, but every time last shooting session I had to drop the hammer twice.

I would guess your caps are not fitting the nipple properly if the cap isnt seated all the way down the first strike seats it and the second strike ignites it. I bought some new nipples recently and half of them were too big for a CCI #11 primer to seat properly.

#11, is that the size we should be using?
I am just using what the seller gave me with the gun. I will check the size later.

As some nipples just to large? What is the proper size and what is the allowable +/-

Awesome, thanks.
Unfortunately I just got a package in the mail from Log Cabin, I could have saved on shipping.
Maybe my local sporting goods store will have them. Big box place, but sometimes that's where I have to go.

They can't be dressed up with a file?
Or are they cheap enough not to make it worth it.

I did try pressing them down with the hammer (with gun pointed down range), but I didn't see that it helped markably.

Sounds like your caps are not fully seated on the nipple. You could use a short wooden dowel to assist seating of cap if you want. Do NOT use your thumb. It may be almost impossible to set off a cap with pressure from your thumb, but if it did happen it would be painful and messy.

Possible that the nipple is peened a bit from ‘dry firing’. A little work with a file could correct that. Another thing to consider, different manufactures caps are slightly different in size. If I am remembering correctly, CCI caps are slightly larger than Remington of the same ‘size’. I typically buy caps in quantities of 1000 or more, then set up nipples to fit that lot of caps, particularly with caps I am using on revolvers.

Cherokee barrels could also be had from the custom shop in 36 caliber, at one time I had 3 of them. This one I still own.

I also had a Seneca in 32 Caliber , it was the correct length but the barrel never said Seneca but older one didn't.

I'm sharing pictures of my Seneca and Cherokee 36 calibers.
