This is the silver sideplate installed flush.
I chose this shape and orientation to match the spikey triggerguard and buttplate.
The lock panel is well defined, and the raised shoulder is only about 3/32" tall.
The lock bolster was machined down to allow the lock to sit as close as possible to the barrel without interference. The rifle is skinny!
So to define the lock panels, I could not go for depth, so the border is shallow but very near 90 degrees on the "wall".
As the sandpaper gets finer, as does the color of the cherry stock. I am just about done with the wood, and I will be getting prepared for my next build. I am beginning to recognize the initial symptoms of "Builder's Madness". :shake:

Looking very nice

I'm working on a .32 with a 3/4" bbl and it's going to be slim one also. I'm not near as far along as you are. I just got the lock in and now putting in the triggers. That side plate is a nice touch and will make a unigue build.

Thanks, Mike-
A .32 sounds like a great idea! I have always wanted to shoot one, that little ball must be fun to load and fire.
Are you going for a fullstock or a half?

It's a fullstock. I'm kind of partial to them. The .58 Hawken flinter I built this summer was a fullstock also.

I got the barrel and furnature from TOW in October. I already had a Dixie Ashmore lock and some triggers I picked up 15-20 years ago. I got the stock blank from Muzzleloaders Building Supply. They were the only ones I could find who could cut a 3/4" barrel channel. It was delivered the first of this month.

I have a .36 with a 42" that I built 30 years ago but I wanted a smaller lighter rifle this time. This has a 36" GM barrel. I wanted something like a .22, small light and fun to shoot for plinking and an occasional rabbit.

BaaHaaaaaa! I keep trying to warn you folks but you won't listen to me.

The bug has bit!

At this stage of building a rifle if you are thinking about the next one, your hooked. There is no escaping.
I think I have it worse than you do though.
I just ordered a Buck County stock and swamped barrel from Pecatonica River and I'm thinking of calling them back to also order a Southern Mountain style. :) :)

You're right Zonie

As I'm working on the .32, I'm thinking of getting the parts together for a a cool 24 or 28 gauge Northwest Trade gun.

Can I never get this monkey off my back. :shocked2:

I am hooked for sure!
Could not sleep last night....smoothbore or rifled?
Building rifles is a true test of skill, all those mistakes I made, and I was giving it my all.
Going out of your way to start two rifles at once? A little too hardcore for me at this time, Zonie! :haha:
