Hello folks, I have been shooting my Chimney Point 36 cal percussion I picked up a bit ago. Really the first few times out with it but only noticed a slight problem. When I set the set trigger after the hammer is back I noticed if I push forward or say bump on the set trigger it will drop the hammer. Now when I set the trigger before I pull the hammer back I have no issues at all. I can push that set trigger forward and the hammer stays put until I fire. Any ideas what might cause this? My adjustment screw is set perfect and will fire with no noticeable creep. Not a hair trigger just light touch. I tried searching and at best come up with some triggers must be set before cocking. Much appreciated with any help.

You haven't said whether you have double lever and can fire the rifle with the front trigger is the triggers aren't set. But really, that doesn't matter as the issue is with the lever of the rear set trigger. There is a spring on the trigger plate that is raising the set trigger lever and interfering with the sear lever in the lock. When the trigger are set before the hammer is cocked, the set trigger lever is lower in the lock mortise and will not interfere with the sear lever. The solution will depend on how the trigger plate is held in the stock.
I was going to remove the trigger plate but ran into a roadblock. Not sure but if it's pinned. I have attached a picture. After unscrewing the top plate screw it still doesn't budge.

If I don't use the set trigger the front firing trigger will work, but which makes it unsafe is when you bump that set trigger forward. Then it set of the hammer. It works fine using the set trigger before cocking.

Nope, that’s the screw for the mainspring.
I think it's the tang screw.
Yes I can see what your saying. So maybe I'll take the top screw back out and tug on it. Could it be just really a tight fit? I thought it would drop out fairly easily.
