It was nice to get out and make some smoke today! I was determined to give the square patches another try in Shadowmaker, the .36 flintlock. It shot terrible with pillow ticking and so-so with denim. Went back to ROUND patches and the grouping was good with .015 Ox-Yoke and even better with .018 pillow ticking. Not disputing that square patches will work, but this rifle just doesn't seem to like them.

Today was the first opportunity to try one of the flat priming horns SuperFlint built. It worked great! The Tresco dispenser tip made priming quick and easy.

An older fellow next to me was letting his twenty-something year-old son shoot a percussion rifle for the first time. The son was asking me questions about the flintlock, so naturally I asked him if he wanted to shoot it. He did and I think he caught the bug!

Well, Merry Christmas everyone! May you enjoy many days in the woods, many nights at camp, and many visits to the range in '06

Yup,
Same here!Merry Christmas everyone!

I went out Yesterday at the club and tried out my new 40 cal. Grn. Mtn. barrel dropin. First time I shot three shots in the same hole, from the bench. I am fighting Tendoniteous (tennis elbow) so my grouping is not great. but at 25 yards I shot one bull and 2 others shots 3/4 inch from center, off hand, I was pleased. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and Happy[/color] New Year. :hatsoff:

Had a good time at the range today also. The temp was about 30 degree here Minnesota. I also asked about the square patches versus rounds patches on this forum sometime ago. I tried square pacthes today and round patches. I found no difference in the groups. You said your rifle liked round patches. I wonder why that would be? I shoot a Kentucky 45 cal. Well Merry Christmas to you.

Guess your .45 ain't as finicky as my .36 :blah: :hmm: Many in the 'Forum have had good results with square patches. So I went back with a different lube and gave the square patches another try after previous disappointing results with square patches. The H & H barrel likes a .360 ball, Ox-Yoke wonder-lubed cotton .015 patches pretty well; it really groups best with wonder-lubed pillow ticking .018 patches even better. So I'll hunt with the ticking and plink with the cotton patches.

When the.54 flinter is completed, will probably try the square patches init and see if the Green Mountain barrel likes'em :winking:
