Just got in a new order of the .500 fiber wads :cursing: problem: non-lubed :cursing:

So fellow smoothbore shooters, how or what to lube them with that won't disintegrate the fiber?

What to do?? How to do it?? I bought a thousand :hmm:

Thanks

I put some in a plastic bag, add a dash dilute Murphy's Oil Soap, seal it, leave it overnight. The soap miraculously arranges itself so they are all vaguely damp all the way through. There are probably lots of reasons why this is a terrible idea, but it works for me :idunno:

I roll just the edges (wads on a pin) in molten moose shot. Don't want to soak up a lot of weight and slow down the load.

A gozillion years ago I made up a wad lube recommended by Dixie Gun Works of equal parts beeswax, mutton tallow and Crisco. I still make this up occasionally and put up a few years worth of wads. again - just rolling the edges in it while it is molten.

If'n ya need ta... Got old Sweet (olive) Oil? It goes rancid after 2-3 years if it WASN'T opend. Six months, maybe a a little more when lucky if it was opened... Good for shootin'.

Oh, and less is more!

You could send them back and get the pre-lubed ones....either you odered the wrong ones, or they sent you the wrong ones :idunno: or just lube them yourself.

Mike,

Try this. With your fingers break the .500 wads in half. Put the first half into the bore and push down a couple of inches. Put in a "gob" of your favorite lube. Gob is not a technical term so about 1/4 teaspoon. put the second half of the wad into the bore and push the two halves together and you have a lubed wad. The lube will spread on the barrel surface as it is pushed down and keeps it cleaner for your follow up shots.

I did this for my wads. Just a drop of of beeswax in a thrift store frying pan. Low heat put as many as will fit on the longest needle I can find.Roll reads across and back in pan.place flat on paper towel to dry. These worked for me for many years. Now I use tow over powder an over shot. Never had a bird or rabbit complain yet. :2

The idea of splitting them in half with lube in the middle is a great idea.
A small squeeze tube should do you all day.
Clean, neat, no mess and a well lubed barrel.
You could probably use it for hemorrhoids in a pinch.
What a great idea!.
:hmm:

I sometimes wad my smoothbores with two 1/8" cards with a dollop of lube between them, no cushion wad. It does a good job of keeping the fouling soft.

I'm using larger ones with shot, but I just guestimate the # I'll need the next day and put them in ziploc the night before with a little olive oil. Dump off the excess oil in the morning and I'm ready to go.

Always some extra wads left over cuzz I consistently overestimate what I'll need. Haven't seen any problems with them coming apart, but I only have them around a few days. If I was better at thinking ahead and preparing I might even let them sit a day after dumping off the excess oil. They go from "wet" to barely damp in another day and still seem to work as well.

Lotta ways to do it, depending on how much you want to fiddle and the details of your own carrying and loading routines. The old man I learned from back in the 1960's melted some combo of beeswax and Crisco together, poured it over his wads in a coffee can, then ladled out the wads after a few minutes and laid them out for the lube to cool and harden. He'd been doing it that way for years and said he learned it from his dad, who used hog lard rather than Crisco.

Never got around to experimenting with the fat/beeswax blends to find what's right for me, but if I was a trap shooter or some such and needed hundreds in a weekend I'd probably go that route.

Must be something about old men, because I do exactly the same. Started with Crisco and beeswax years ago, switched to lard and beeswax several years ago. I use those as my standard wad for both ball and shot, have for a long time, and am still happy with them.

Old Ford,

In a blind or when I am going to carry the gun around before shooting I also use the shot card - lube - and a cork over shot card to seal the bore. Very useful in a duck blind. You used to be able to get the cork wads from several suppliers but hard to find now. But you can get the cork in sheets from most automotive stores as gasket material. Generally 2 ft by 2 or 3 ft. About 1/8 in thick. Use a wad punch and have at it. Really works well and the cork practically disintegrates when shot. When I used two cardboard cards with lube in between, like Spence suggested, it seemed to sometimes get soft around the edge and I was afraid it would move. The cork keeps it nice and tight. If you decide to use it on hemorrhoids I'll let you write about it.

I have used their wads for about 30 years. Didn't know they came pre lubed. Not sure I want those anyway.

At the local matches, competitors throw a few in a can of soapy water and swish them around. And set them aside so they are not still dripping wet when pushed down the barrel.

I have always used them dry. Or at most sprayed them lightly with a bit of cooking oil. (Fire hazard in dry areas)

I've soaked them in melted Crisco before and then let them sit and kind of dry. It seems like they always stay a little to wet unless you squeeze them out though.

I also have smeared them with mink oil.

Either way works okay, but the mink oil makes less of a mess.

Don't do it this way: http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/291019/post/1429849/hl//fromsearch/1/

A little moisture is fine. If you can stand having them in your mouth, saliva works fine.
Any oil or beeswax is very good.
Thanks
