Has anyone mounted clay pigeons to a target backer for offhand practice? If so, how did you attach to target? I was thinking about drilling small hole and tying ot tie-wrapping to cardboard backer....

We use clay targets alot in CAS as a bonus.

If you have a fairly substantial cardboard backer you just need to cut a hole that will allow a friction fit. They'll stay put pretty well until the edge of the hole gets torn up too badly.

If you use a piece of plywood for the backer just put a couple of nails on either side of the hole and stretch a rubber band across them to hold the target in place.

Also have hung clay targets on a string or wire using a clothes pin as a clamp.

A stick of hot melt glue will glue about two hundred strings to birds. As the old brylcream commerical says : " A little drop will do you." :yakyak:

Bakeoven Bill and ohio ramrod - thanks! Next time I go to the range I'll try the clay pigeons as an alternative to just punching paper. Should make offhand practice a bit more interesting...

One more way to hang 'em & shoot 'em:

Drill a small hole through the clay birds very carefully, then put a string through the hole. Tie the string together near the top of the string, away from the birds. Then staple the string to the cardboard backer. Works rain or shine, in all types of weather.

You can put a rubber band around the circumference of a clay target, then use fishing line to tie the rubber band to your backboard. You can then use the rubber band to hold the next clay target, unless your shot cut the rubber band.

We did this at the club, but hung them from a target frame, and used fishing line stretched behind the clays to keep them from turning in the wind. Its amazing how few times we had to replace any of the fishing line.
