anybody who happens to own an 1849......cylinder and nipples were nasty. soaked them in a small Kraft Old English cheese spread jar that is used in our household as an extra small juice glass.
part denatured alcohol part hoppes #9. 1/2 hour soak.
had to build my own nipple wrench by dremeling a very small socket driver bit.

another fun Google search for you all.looking nice, set up your trail cam on it. So you will know when she decided to make it her own.
oh yeah.sorry keep posting progress on this one but hope it will help out another newbie like me.
complete malfunction breakdown this last weekend.
broke a handspring. took my wife's springy hairclip and made a new one. had to dremel into the handspring arm to give a notch. notch was needed to pry open and remove 1/8" remaining part.
then I had trouble reassembling and getting inner working to work right.
despite exhaustive youtube and internet searches could not figure it out.
may seem simple to some folk.......but one piece of instruction.
when putting the bolt/trigger spring back in......there is one important step not explained.
make sure you put the long arm on top of the trigger sear or it will not reset or work properly. put in upsidedown and it seems springy but does not reset. short side of spring curves down into the bolt.View attachment 245439View attachment 245440
think I'll make a YouTube video explaining the inner workings of the blackpowder action and how it works....nothing available on this that I've searched.
she's back in the saddle again.....oddly enough didn't have to adjust handspring tension. nailed it on the first go around.

I named her Leary........but in Scotish Gaelic is spelled "Laoghaire".any thoughts on this?

thanks for providing input. How old do you think your .31 is?
My 1849 has weird size thread on nipples. Had to have one custom made. If you find any from slix that work be sure to lemme know. They are COOL! My daughter in law is sure nice to me when we take it out to the range and I could see her asking for one soon. Ladies love em!
That proof mark was first used in '51.thanks for providing input.
I'd think before 1951????
if it's their first proof mark......I'm more than confident with that assessment.
