If you have the time (it does move along quickly) I found this interesting from the start -- I mean who doesn't love "a find" -- and enjoyable overall, however, the cringe-factor soon turned to pucker.

If this guy holds himself out to be an above average, experienced, blackpowder shooter with the knowledge, skill, attitude and ambition to warrant making related videos, man oh man, even taking into account its decline this is really one naive and lazy community (which of course is not evident on our forum). "The Pathfinder School" indeed...

How many things do you note that this well-meaning guy didn't get or do completely right if not altogether wrong, including "shortcuts"?

Entusiastic perspective but weak execution!

I liked it and could find stuff that is not technically correct but saw nothing I thought was dangerous or particularly terrible. I feel he was addressing the general public not seasoned and experienced muzzle loading shooters.
I guess unless I'm going to go to the trouble of making a better video showing more advanced methodology and procedure I should not criticize his effort.
Having said that I bet the bore is heavily pitted from what came out the flash hole at cleaning. Still if the rifling is strong and it doesn't tear patches it should be a fine shooter and I would have given 275.00 for it. Mike D.

Dave Canterbury Brings to the table a modern survivalists theory and practice.
His is a mix of old school function with a "today" practical application that has nothing to do with our study of Traditionalism.

The Guy has a ton of really great stuff available.

He's a good guy and he means well, I didn't see anything that I would remotely call "alarming".
Looked like a decent buy and a good day outside, I thought it was actually worth watching.

Everybody does it a little bit differently. He seemed to do ok, and I learn by watching. This particular rifle is nice, but not very valueable, so I would not worry about anything he did. I enjoyed the video.

I do not personally care for Dave Canterbury. The reason he left discovery was he padded his resume. It stuck in my craw.

I don't know,
Maybe he left Discovery because he got tired of spending time with a fruitcake iron pumping hippie that's trying to genetically alter his body by not wearing shoes!

If I heard that flintlock referred to as a "weapon" by this apparent jarhead one more time...

How does the man not have the common sense to at least take a brass brush to a rusty lock, that admittedly he doesn't quite seem to know how works, if he's just too friggin' lazy to actually take it apart just a little? He was worried about the frizzen and not the internal mechanism of the lock? No worries -- Rem oil will "penetrate the metal."

...as well as the wood he sprayed on top of the finished barrel he took steel wool to in case there was any rust. Really? Heaven forbid he contemplate taking the barrel out just once!

And why couldn't he buy some .50 ball? He was making a video about this gun!

In these and many other respects it was kinda like watching an excited but dopey young kid with a new toy who just wanted to play with it already...

What is "fixin' wax"? How did his greasy looking patch material dry out while resting atop his bag? He seemed to hover directly over the muzzle a few times.

Question for you flintlock shooters. Do you wear shooting glasses? I use eye protection with every thing I shoot.

Almost forgot. His tattoos were distracting. They wouldn't have cut it when I was in the navy.

exactly. the guy he called about the gun, Steve " critter Davis is getting into the more traditional side of things and i suspect that has Dave going that way now. i am sure just like the rest of us Dave was not born knowing everything under the sun and has to learn. he has a huge following of young folks and hopefully with his videos he can move some of them to realize old ways still work.
as for his discovery channel deal he did admit to padding his resume and made an apology to all the folks he beat out who played fair, he seemed to me to be genuine in his remorse and if that is the worst he does he will have no problem beating me out, ive done worse standing on my head, not proud of any of it but i was young, stupid and determined to do things my way spite hell once, it cost me and it cost Dave- lesson learned, wont do that again. hopefully he wont either.
