I have in the past and still sometimes do. I'm really not sure at this point that it makes a difference. Doesn't seem to hurt, though.

I always use soap then rinse with clean water and have done so for over thirty years I was just thinking is it really needed to use soap.I doubt that soap was at the top of the list of things they caried with them in the old days.

The purpous of using soap over plain water, is to break up the surface tension. Dawn seems to work better than most.

I use soap in the first swabbing of the bore because I use a patch lube with vegetable oil in it.

I think water alone would work fine for dissolving the black powder fouling but it won't dissolve the oil.

After the initial soap and water the rest of the cleaning I do uses water only.

I run warm water over a bar of Ivory soap, while working the bar in my hand as the tub fills to clean my guns with.

If I have any handy I use a little.Simply because it cleans my hands better with a little soap. If not it just takes a little more water. :hmm:

some times depends on how I feel. or some times just warm water. it also works good. in rondy camp I use 3 rivers cleaner works very well. and all it is 1 part proxide 1 part rubbing alchol. 1 part murphys soap.

My recipe:

three drops of Dawn or Polmolive in a half pint of water

the soap makes the water wetter or as mentined breaks the surface tension and works on whatever residual patch lube is down there. Careful to not use too much or it will suds up and be a pain to get it all out.

BTW, Castile soap was listed in trade invoices in large quantities. Yep, they had soap on the frontier. I use Kirk's Castile soap every day, all the time at home and carry it to encampments. Great stuff, you can clean your gun with it, wash your hair or the dishes or even do some quick laundry with it in camp. It cleans well and rinses out easily. Wash your face with it every day and you will look young and beautiful like me...... :rotf: :surrender: :blah:

Hey Laffindog!
I agreed with your post UNTIL I got to the last line. :rotf:  But after serious rumination and cogitation I realized that I had found a KINDRED SPIRIT.After all it is exceedingly difficult to be humble when one is infallible and a sex symbol to boot
