Mike Miller's video on "Building the Daniel Boone Rifle" is a good video too. Both the Miller and House Videos are available through the Log Cabin Shop. If you buy the House Videos, I suggest ordering the companion book, " Building the Kentucky Longrifle" by K. A.. & J. W. Wright, as well.

Other good venues are the NMLRA gun building class, and the Hershel House Woodbury School foundation. They are hosting a longrifle buttpiece and triggerguard forging class in a couple of weeks.

I built a few kits 20+ yrs ago and a flint form scratch at the same time. I have had the hardware and stock/barrel in storage all that time. Now that life is letting me I planed on start working on them this winter. Seeing/finding this thread and the 'BillRaby' videos among the other tips I am thinking it is time, all of the signs are happening. Going to watch some videos, sort of a build along. 20 years ago I had an 'old' guy guiding me along, unfortunately he has passed, so I don't have that resource.

I have two of his rifles, and was contemplating getting a third when I found out he was gone.

Hello all I want to get into building my own guns, to recreate some older models because it's difficult to find Spanish Muskets now a days . ANYWAYS I was looking for some points and tools that I'll need to get started. I'm in alabama and have some basic tools already but there some things I don't believe I have and I want to hear from experienced builders on what they use and what I would likely need. So I can create a list. I'm not aiming to exactly forge every little piece but I'd like to carve my own stocks, etc. As well as put together and fit the parts how I want. Like I said not sure I'll be forging the tangs and barrels or anything but still. Anyways thanks all!

The Kit Ravenshear series of small, soft cover booklets have some really good pointers.
I think they are still available and should not cost too much. I think there are 6 or 8 in the series.
Get books from more than one maker.
