I'm installing a steel nose cap on my old tennessee with acraglass to repair some muzzle end stock damage. Can I cold brown the cap after final fitting or do I have to remove it first? I'm concerned with screwing up the nice wood/metal joint. If I brown it first and then do the final install, I'll scratch the new browning while I'm fitting it. Any ideas/techniques??

Tape off the stock and barrel, and brown the cap in place. You will need to use a damp washrag to wash off the residue between applications, but that is a pretty minor difference. Use that tape that is blue and used to tape off walls, when painting, so you don't have to worry about glue residue remaining ont he gunstock or barrel when you are done and remove the tape. That small a browning job should allow you to use a single cotton ball, or a couple of Q-tips to apply the solution to the cap.

Let us know how it comes out.

Have browned a few "iron" MCs and just use masking tape carefully applied so as to leave only a maximum of 1/64" or less wood exposed. My normal finish is LMF sealer and this seems to be unaffected by the browning solution, but I tape anyway. Don't know if other finishes would be harmed by the solution......Fred
