I have ordered a fancy maple stock for my GPR from Tiger Hunt, if anyone is interested Mike will make a duplicate of the halfstock that comes with the kit. I would like to finish it in that deep reddish brown color that is found on a lot of custom rifles, if anyone would have pictures of how a certain stain and finish like that turned out I would greatly appreciate it.

who is tiger hunt? and how do we find him? does he have a web site?

The website for Tiger Hunt gunstocks is www.gunstockwood.com and the mans name is Michael Barton. The website does not specifically list a stock for the GPR but in speaking with him he does have a pattern and will make one. Tiger Hunt is also listed under the link section in forum index section of this web site.

It's hard to visualize the effect you want to duplicate. If it's real fancy wood, aqua fortis does a wonderful job of bringing out the curl. OTOH, there is no way of know until you do a test as to just how dark your wood will be.

Here is a picture of a maple stock that i used aqua fortis on. I did not do a test cause I did not have an extra piece of the matching wood. This came out way darker than I expected but even so I was quite happy with it.

Does Tiger hunt need to have a GPR stock sent to them? How much $$?

Here is a picture of the stock I just did with Aqua Fortis. Just another color to look at. Definitly depends on the wood as far as the color that pops out.

Nitrate of Iron, Aquafortis does a beautiful job on maple.

Let us know how this turns out. Please post pics when it arrives and again when finished. I have been looking for a maple halfstock for a GPR.

That is the reddish brown color I am talking about but I see the aquaforis also can produce a blondish color. I guess I will have to experiment, I had the impression a stain was used to get the red undertones.

Tiger hunt has a pattern and would not need a stock sent to them, I ordered what is being called exhibition grade and the approximate cost is $165.00 and there are several grades available of maple as well as cherry.

Ask Mr. Barton to save you a few scraps and send them with the stock for test pieces. Aqua fortis looks different on every piece of maple. I may have to do with how much sugar or tannic acid is present in tne wood.

This is a fowler I built. I used LMF nut brown stain. I didn't cut it at all. It turned out ok but next time I will cut it and use multilpe coats to build up to a color I like.I just got lucky with this stock.

Definately ask for a test piece of the same wood. I notices a big increase in the red with a second coat of AF. Im glad I had a tester to play with. I slathered it on heavy, let it dry completely, then blushed it with a heat gun.
