While I'll agree that the laws, especially bear, are complex in Colorado, Mustang 65 your statement is not really the truth. Muzzleloader and archery bear tags are only available as draw licenses (same as deer and elk), and have been that way for many years. So you can actually hunt only bear with a muzzleloader (or archery or rifle), without a deer or elk license, you just need to apply for them in the draw in April (see pages 63 & 64 in the 2022 big game brochure). However, CPW is attempting to make it easier to get a bear tag in some units and in those units you can purchase an over-the-counter (OTC) bear license (muzzleloader, archery or rifle) but only if you have a deer or elk that overlaps by unit and method of take (page 66 in the 2022 big game brochure). It's true...it does complicate things, but it's meant to increase opportunity for some areas and keeps the crowding issue down for other units. I hope this helps...
Whatever. What I was trying to get across: First you had to have a habitat license to hunt big game. Then you had to have a habitat and small game license to hunt big game. The bear draw areas have been reduced. And now areas that are loaded with bear population are no longer available for an add-on bear license. I have hunted area 69 for over 20 years, and it is loaded with bear. This year, during muzzleloader season, no OTC bear add-on. In Commierado as in most states, it has nothing to do with conservation, it's a money game.

What kind of reasoning to you expect when they're smoking legalized weed. It will get worse when the next weed wackers take over.

In this state , what is starting to happen , will be the future of animal management. Calls for help to remove problem bears , go unanswered , stocking predators , large and small , under the guise of making the wildlife in the state , the same as it was in earlier days.
The result of this plan is , where the predators aren't wanted by the public , they are shot , and wasted. Some years ago , plans that hunters were being excluded , as the way of reducing game animal populations , was in evidence , when the game managers stated that , hunters were only a "TOOL" of the environmentalists plans. The future of animal population management is , anti-hunter. Some years ago , one of our governors signed on to a United Nations "Going Greener" treaty , managed , from Austria. How many other states signed on to foreign "Going Greener " treaties as did this state? In order to follow the United Nation's plan , the state had to begin extermination of the deer population. The rest is history. Most of the small game species are in chaos , due to the introduction of coyote's , pine martins , too many bears , mountain lions , bobcats , and last , but not least , flocks of Federally protected predator birds.
The public knows little , nor cares about , the mess the "Conservationists" , have caused. I have few years to care , but folks should know what has happened. ...........luck to ya.
Any PETA influence? Makes you wonder?

Should be PITA (Pain in the ......) not PETA I am surprised someone hasn't proposed an animal rights law like you must ask the target animals permission to shoot them or how many trees have been shot by missing your target animal (tree huggers).

You are correct my good man. Don't let the Feds or State forest services see this. It just gives them more ideas....lol.

I live in Colorado up North Turkey Creek Canyon 17 miles from Golden we have had lots of bear problems this year killing chickens getting into bear proof trash cans. Cars if your doors aren't locked etc.
Ever since the State put an end to spring bear hunting by vote?
The bear population has exploded.
So the now parks and wildlife thanks( john chicken looper?)
Used to be the Division of wildlife.
They use the money coming in from hunting license sales to build bicycle paths and hiking trails for the vary people that are against hunting and guns in general. What?

I hear you. You are correct. Have you ever seen a total waste of taxpayer money than bicycle lanes?! I travel to pueblo quite frequently and Colorado Springs. As many times as I have been there, not one bicycle on the road!! Sidewalks?? YES!! A government of IDIOTS!!

I totally agree. I moved up to the Vail Valley from off of Turkey Creek about 2 years ago. I had many issues with bears there and in Conifer. Bears broke into the house twice and into vehicles numerous times. They get into cars up here also.

I don't miss the bicycles from Deer creek/turkey creek at all. There's plenty in the Vail valley.

I was fortunate enough to draw an early season either sex, any approved weapon tag. It runs almost full month of September and is not contingent on drawing archery or muzzle loading. Was lucky in drawing either sex muzzle loading elk and a buck deer muzzle loading tag. And a buck rifle pronghorn tag in rifle season on private land. It takes much more preference points to draw a doe or buck pronghorn than private land rifle. It takes knowing the system, having access to good private or public land and patience. It took 15 years to draw a muzzle loading bull elk tag in a trophy game unit but was worth it. It will now take over 20 points or years of waiting unless you get into a special draw after so many points. For all the com[laints, Colorado still has the world's largest population of elk in the world.

CPW NEW RULE THIS YEAR FOR ARCHERY & MUZZLELOADER SEASONS: NO DEER OR ELK TAG = NO BEAR TAG!! YOU HAVE TO HAVE A DEER OR ELK TAG IN ORDER TO ADD ON BEAR TAG!! BEAR TAGS ARE ADD ON ONLY!!! THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS, WE HAVE IDIOTS RUNNING PARKS & WILDLIFE!
For certain units, either ML or archery you can buy an add on bear licence. Bear rifle, archery, ML are all draw only.
The primary draw in may I didn't draw a ML license for elk bear and pronghorn. I did finally draw a ML buck tag with 5 preference points.
I had 3 for bear, 10 for elk, 14 for pronghorn and did not draw.
The secondary draw in July there was very few elk, deer and bear tags. I didn't draw and elk or bear either.
Yesterday when all the left over licenses went on sale at 9:00am MST. I thought I would try for a left over bear.
I didn't get a licence again. There were a total of 7 bear licences. 1 ML, 1 archery and 5 rifle. I wanted a bear rifle because it is the month Sept like archery and you can use either method of take. IE: ML, bow, or rifle. I was the first in line and sorry to say I didn't get a bear licence. They were sold in the first 30 yes 30 seconds.
I've been hunting in CO for over 50 years and a life time resident. I think CPW needs to rethink their point system and give hunters a better chance to draw a tag of their choice

I´m not American but Brazilian. Here in this country the eco-freaks have for many years outlawed ANY hunting of native species. As soon as I read that post a thinking came to my mind: In short time we all will be ilegals!
Here I hunt only game birds as dove and pigeons (not the city dwelling ones but natives to the place) and and Jacu, a large bird (google up this one), with an air rifle at that, for firearms are strictly controled. So I adopt a variation of the SSS rule: Shoot, Clean and throw into the Pot, SCP for short, and do some fancy dinner for the family. Talk to no one show to no one!
It´s really a sad state of affairs.
Regards, Nicioli

Someone mentioned it’s a money game and I agree. Take Virginia for example. Resident hunting license is $23 . It used to be when you bought your big game tags you got 6 deer tags, 3 turkey tags and a bear tag. Now with the bear population expanding across the state now you have to pay $21 for a bear tag.

I'd happily pay that! I've wanted to get over to the states and hunt for a whitetail buck and/or a black bear with a muzzleloader. Without private access it'd cost me thousands!
