Well after many years of wishing I finaly got a Colt 2nd Gen '51. It must have be shot at some time but not much, looks new to me. None of the nipples or screws were even siezed. I am a happy camper.

This one differs from the norm from what I could reseach. Mine has an unplated brass sguare back trigger gaurd and grip frame while most were silver plated. Serial#239xx. Wish I could figer out when it was made.

I asked him and he was not at home to say for sure but he said C series second generation 76 or 77. Im sure he'll get back when he gets home. Very smart guy with a GIANT revolver collection.

Those are neat pistols, I picked up a 2nd generation London Navy earlier this year. Still waiting to get out and shoot it. If I could find another it would be fun to use in Cowboy Action.

Congratulations on getting your 2nd Generation Colt 1851 Navy! Enjoy.

I also have one with the unplated brass back strap and trigger guard but do not have access to it today or access to my books and records. IIRC mine is in the higher production serial number range like yours. Think mine is correct, but unfortunately did not get a box with it, so do not have the information from the box label.

Think only 500 squareback's were made with out the silver plating out of approx. 25,000 1851's made.

Am not sure if a Colt factory letter would have the bare brass option information, would think yes since it is a variation. A Colt factory letter for a 2nd Generation 1851 costs $75 http://www.coltsmfg.com/CustomerServices/ArchiveServices.aspx . The letter would tell you the gun's date and where shipped.

With your serial number range the Colt I'm reckoning would be made between 1978 - 1982 and be an F series.

Hope this helps some.

Opps. It is late and posting from memory.

Now thinking the 239xx number range mentioned would be near the end of the C series as Brushhippie mentioned. Probably late 1975-76.

Hopefully someone else will chime in. Will have more information later when I can get to it.

I had read elswhere about the 500 unplated 51's. For some reason Track only wanted $400 for it, no box. All serial #s match and it has them out the yazoo.
Comparing it to my Signature Series there are differences. The address line on the barrel can be read while in my right hand while the Sig series is reversed. The 2nd Gen also has a noticable smaller trigger guard and shorter trigger. Also the front sight is smaller on the 2nd and the bottom of the grips have a bevel as opposed to flat on the Sig.
While my Sig series has really been no problem, I got it new in '84 or so (#297xx) I already like the 2nd Gen better.
It should go well with my Parker-Hale Musketoon or my full stock Hawken.
