The Pietta LeMat shot barrel is very close to 18ga(.637) if you go by the English bore size. I use a .625 patched round ball in mine. My barrel is .638, and I have seen another one at .640.
 
In the cavalry the left hand was for the pistol, the right hand was for the officers primary weapon, his saber. thus the left handed holster worn on the right, butt forward for left handed cross draw. Thats why left handed flap holsters seem easier to find.
