I posted this in a thread in the percussion section, but thought I'd get more replies here. Does anyone know if the .58 CVA Mountain Rifle lends itself easily to being converted to flintlock? L&R makes a flint lock that appears to be the same dimensions as the percussion lock. It says they're interchangeable, so it must be the same lock plate, but will the pan line up with the hole if the drum is removed? I've never done a conversion, so forgive the ignorant question. I'd like to convert mine, if it's something that can be done by someone with no experience. Here's the lock:

Also, is the Mountain Rifle the same thread size as this liner (you never know when manufacturers might have changed the specs on some guns)?

I don't know if it would line up or not. If you have the TOW catalog they have all their available locks shown full size and you could find one that was close. If the drum hole is in the wrong place you can fill it with a suitable plug and re-drill it. With the expense of the lock and possible expense of tooling to do the job you might find that it is cheaper to simply sell your rifle and buy a good flintlock.

yeah it should line up. I know cva used to convert them for you $30 i think. May shoot them an email and see what they can do for you.

I answered you over in the percussion section for the first part of your question.

The quick answer is no. I got a freebee colonial pistol with the same breech setup as the Mountain Rifle. I was thinking of making it a flinter. I pulled the drum and got a touch hole liner from my flint Kentucky that is the same as the TOW liner. Not even close. The percussion breech on the CVA is completely different than others on the market. It has a heavier threaded portion that goes all the way through the breechplug and is much larger than those used on standard drum ignition rifles.

How do I remove that drum without damaging it?

The CVA Colonial I took apart was still new in the box. All I had to do put a some leather around the drum and use a pair of vice grips to take it out.

I am assuming the rifle has been fired a bit in the past. You could try to unscrew it like I did but I doubt it would work. The threads probably are gunked up a little. You might try soaking it in penetrating oil for a while and see if that will break it loose.

Did mine 15 years ago by cutting the drum off close to the barrel and filing down then tapping
for a standard 1/4-28 vent liner. It still shoots
