Ok - I have a 1" .62 cal Green Mountain barrel in percussion. I have read that the factory T/C barrels are a bear to un-breech - are the GM barrels as bad?

Can I use one of TOTW's 1" TC flint breech plugs to convert this barrel to flint? Which thread would I need - 11/16 - 20 or 3/4 - 16?

Thanks

Ihave unbreached a number of GM & TC barrels using a barrel vice and action wrench.and there not bad todo .but you are going to hvea to check that thread size the old TC's were 11/16 20 and this new ones I don't know what they were.

IMO:

1) Unless you have the specific tools and knowhow, you run a very high risk of damaging or at least marring your breech plug and barrel and would probably not be satisfied with the result, and void any warranty, etc;

2) On the other hand, I think GM will do the whole breechplug replacement thing + a reblue job for only $60...you might at least give them a call and talk to Kerri.

So after its all said and done, even of you were 100% successful, you'd only save 2-3 burgers & fries in the long run...

Ok - I have the tools and knowhow needed and want to do the project. Not to save money, just cause I want to (same reason I build rifles from parts, rebarrel mausers, etc.).

Anyone know about the thread on GM breeches?

If you had bought a standard GM barrel blank it would be 3/4x16. I can't say for sure the drop-ins are the same but I can't immagine any reason they would be different.

The drop in GM .54 I got, has the 11/16 20 thread I wanted it for my flint .45 so I had to make a new breach plug.as they don't make the .54 with a flint breach plug.

FYI...

They make .54cal Flint smoothbore drop in barrels for the 15/16" TC Hawken...have a couple of them.

Plus, they'll put Flint breech plugs on anything you ask them to...had them convert .40cal and .58cal RB caplock barrels to Flint by swapping breechplugs for me before shipping them.

They tell me they have no more breech plugs and the barrels that were on sale for $100 are discontinued items. Looks like GM isn't making many more T/C Hawken barrels unless they told me wrong.

Next places that would probably have some in stock would be:

Call Ed and Scott Cain in West. VA...# is on their website: www.cainsoutdoor.com

Next place to check would be Tip Curtis / Frontier Shop in Tenn.

Zu, just call them directly yourself...speak to Kerri if she's in...(603) 447-1095

The special $100 sale they've been running is for some left over stock from special runs of barrels that they've made in the past couple years...the fast twists, the smoothbores, etc...you need to call about the $100 sale...as of last week they still had some cap and flint 15/16" .54cal drop-in smoothbore barrels.

Also, this link takes you to their page of drop-in barrels that are normal production...just double click on any photoi and that size barrel is exploded into the various offerings.
NOTE: The special $100 sale items are not on the website.

I can understand them not making any of the kinda special purpose barrels , but the comment about not making any barrels for the T/C any more bothered me.

They told me it wasn't a sale but a close out and included 54 cal flint slow twist, all smooth bores, 58 cal percusion and all the others I asked about (didn't ask about any fast twist or small bores).

wow , surprised they would quit the 54 flint ...I would think that would be a big seller

I kept putting off buying a couple of their barrels until I found the pre-carve stock; lock and trigger inlet and various components to build a rifle. I called Green Mountain concerning a 15/16 1/28 barrel and they were sold out with none being made in the future. Claimed they were poor sellers. They will not be making any drop-in barrels for TC guns in the future. When they are gone; that's it.
