I have no reason to believe these weren't made before. There is a solid bottom to it just like cane etc. It was extremely easy to make and more readily available than cane/bamboo etc. I suppose it would break if I fell on it. :haha:

Looks kind of fragile to me but if it works, it works and you can't argue with success. BTW, that is a neat pattern around the base. :hatsoff:
