greetings:

recently i purchased a .32 cal dixie gun works tenn mountain rifle flintlock.

i have checked on mould sizes and they differ from
.310 to .315.

so do i buy a few balls of the same mentioned sizes and see which is best?

and what thickness for the patch? i heard pillow ticking is quite good.

whats the best combo? thick patch, smaller ball or vise versa?

thanks for your answers.

I have the same rifle - only in percussion. The mold I have is actually a .311. I haven't tried any other size balls in the rifle and I probably won't, it shoots the .311's very well.

I wouldn't hurt to get both ball sizes and a selection of patching. This would give you some play room to see what load/patch/ball combination is the most accurate in that particular rifle. Every one is different even from the same manufacturer. Working up a load is a tedious process but well worth the time and energy put into it.

My .32 has a 1:48 GM barrel. I use 30 grains 3F with a .311 ball and .024 denim patch. That gives me 1" groups at 50 yards.
