Hello,

For my blunderbuss I am looking for an era correct sideplate. the trigger dates to 1760-1780ish (acorn) and im not sure about this sideplate at track of the wolf. would this be correct?

If you're going for 1760's-1780's, the English often used a "triangle" sideplate. Military blunderbusses often had a rounded or flat version of the Bess sideplate, and many "trade" blunderbusses would have no sideplate at all.

This picture is from the book "SMALL ARMS" by Frederick Wilkinson, 1965 and it shows the sideplate for a small blunderbuss.

You might note that if you take the bottom (Bess) sideplate in your picture and cut off the extension to the right of the upper bolt hole location it would result in being almost identical with the sideplate in the photo. :)

The serpent, or dragon, sideplate is suited more for a trade musket than a blunderbuss. I'd use the brown bess sideplate that's third down in your other post, if it was me. There are others that are correct -- some more correct, probably -- but you won't go wrong with a military-style plate.

You might want to look at a few more books on the subject. If memory serves me, the serpent side plate started out as a British issued plate on firelocks for the British Marines. Seems to me that they might have a few blunderbusses issued! :hmm:

"triangle" sideplate...one sort of like the top one, though no one really makes a very "English looking" triangle sideplate. One could be cut out of sheet brass easily enough.

ok here's the real problem. the lock that I have is a queen anne lock, may have to get another lock for the sideplate.

The side plate that matches this one is here.

this will work for alignment but what date ranges would this be correct?

anyone have a good photo of a very good english triangle sideplate that I could copy?
