When we did the 200 anniversary of the 3 Kaisers battle in Leipzig back in 2013 there was a company of Polish cavalry that had been unable to bring their horses due to some misunderstanding with the veterinarians and customs. They entered the battlefield with stick horses that had decorated artificial horse heads at the end of the stick. The horsemanship of the Cossack cavalry had no equal is my humble guess!
 
I'd guess it's an armpit shooter, mostly from horseback! Let's see what others say.
