i got the nw trade gun from S&S. i am wondering for building a shot cartridge for hunting, with various shots,do you lube the over the powder card? also what size is the punch i need for a .60's wads? 5/8" punch?

Andy

I lubed the outer paper and used it as a patch on roundball, for shot, I roll just the pre measured shot, I then use lubed balls of tow over powder, dump the shot down and wad the paper over the shot, the lubed wad of tow keeps the fouling soft, beeswax and olive oil lube

Reference V.M. Starr, the old time gunsmith who used to do lots of barrel work. He never used anything but 1/8th inch thick hard card wads for shot loads as I recall, with no lube. Dr. Sam Fadala covered him in one of his black powder books, but I can't recall which one. IIRC, a 5/8ths punch works great for wads for a 20 guage, but might be a bit tight for you in a .60 caliber. Try it!

Thinner than 1/8".
I tend to just use about three OS cards.

I have read VM stars writings on the smoothbore. Lots of good info but i cant ask him questions lol.
I am only planning to use shot and buck shot in my trade gun for meat hunting. When the gun gets here i can work on load development and be able to better ask questions. thank you guys for the advice and knowledge.

Thank you, Brit, I knew the truth was out there, Ha! Back in my vagrant youth we used wadded up pieces of brown paper grocery bag, enough to make an over powder wad 1/2" to 3/4" thick, and an over shot wad just thick enough to hold the shot in.

I've always had good success using a couple 1/8" dampened nitro cards over 80 grains of 2F powder & an overshot card to hold the same measure of shot in.
A 5/8" punch works good for a 20 gauge.
