well I decided not to make a oure leather flask for my friend and go with a less PC product, I bought a metal hip flask and now want to cover it in leather... any ideas how to do this ??
also what leather should Iuse ??

There was an issue of Muzzleloader Magazine a couple of years ago that had a great article showing how to cover a glass bottle with leather. I'm sure the same principle would work for a metal flask. Perhaps someone could help with the exact issue.

Rosco, I've covered a lot of the glass ones and think it would work just as well on a metal one.
I saw an original glass one dug up when they were digging the tunnel under San Francisco bay. I had no idea how to do it either but tried it this way.
Wet the leather laid out flat, put some contact cement on bottom of bottle, sat it in the middle of leather, folded the sides up and cemented them to the bottle. Left a piece about 1" by about 3" on each side at the bottom and folded it up against the bottle then stretched the leather tight around the bottle and sewed it leaving enough for a tab to attach the straps, worked out well. This was an old heart shaped wine bottle.

If shooting, it'll have water in it but other times it might have Pie in it.

That is a worrisome idea. :(
Do check on possible reactions between the "pie" and the metal. I'm not a chemist so won't say don't do it. I'll just say, I wouldn't do it. :shake:

Didn't do it myself, but the coolest metal flask I've ever seen was covered with rawhide. The guy cut two halves to shape, sewed up the bottom half, resersed the cover and pulled it onto the flask. Then he used outside seams to finish the job. It might sound weird, but I sure liked the looks. After handling and shooting in a couple of range sessions that rawhide was black enough to make it look 100 years old, too.

Dead eye that looks great ... maybe if I find an old mickey sized wiskey bottle I would forsure do what you did. Also BrownBear that sounds interesting and I can see rawhide looking even better than leather... can u post a picture ??
