I don't know about a 54 but in my 50 cal I use 70 grains of pyrodex because nobody around here carries black powder. I would use the lightest load you could and still achieve good accuracy.
 
The question depends on if your rifle has fixed sights?If so the load that the firearm is regulated for. :winking:
 
Your regular hunting load would be best, I dropped one with 100 grns when I first started using my weapon, that was before I found this place and learned a thing or two, A good lung shot and it never took a step,

Use your standard deer load. Coyotes are tough and you need the accuracy inherent to your best load.
