Anybody build a lyman plains pistol? I been researching them and it seems they are a pretty popular item as well as an easy build.

I've seen lots of pictures of GPR kits that guys have customized. Anybody do anything special with Plains Pistol Kit?

Pictures if you got em?

I'd sure like to see some as well. I do believe a 54 plains pistol kit is in my future.

Regards, Vic

While this isn't a Plains pistol, it is similar....a CVA. Here is what I did to it last summer, good or bad. I took off some wood, reshaped the lock panels and poured pewter nose cap and butt cap. I do have a Lyman Plains pistol in 54 caliber that I would like to do similar work on.

neither are mine...I just kept the pics cuz I always planned on building one ......

Steve, you're right in that those pistols are very appealing. Hmmm, gives me a few more ideas for my Lyman .54......

Here's my plains pistol.

My customization was making a new front sight and a tear drop side plate. The Lyman front sights are way too thick for my tastes so I made one using a thin piece of steel and a brass base. The tear drop side plate is brass and is held with a domes single slot screw. I also added a flash cup mostly for looks.

I like the Plains pistol, it is a good shooter...

Scott,

Your pistol is very well done. Did you not brown or blue the barrel or did you treat the barrel in another way ?

Thanks, Vic

I used Birchwood Casey super blue, which is a cold blue, on the barrel, and other steel, then rubbed it back with 0000 steel wool until it was a very light gray.

Nice finish - to say the least. More ideas to keep track of as I plan to build one as well.

Super Blue will work but it is best if youdon't really want a fine looking blued finish.

It is specially made for use with the high alloy steels needed with modern guns.

Perma Blue works best on the low carbon steels that muzzleloaders are built from if a nice blued finish is what your after.

Of course, no cold bluing is really a good well wearing finish. To get that one has to use a salt bluing or better yet a rust blueing.

Also, if the idea is to use the bluing and then wear it off so it looks old the cold bluing is great because getting worn off easily is one thing that all of the cold bluing stuff is really good at.

Thanks Zonie, that's one of my peeves about the super blue, trying to get it even...
