Crockett rifle-just because!

Wanted a Crockett rifle kit for awhile now to see what I could do with it besides just putting it together straight out of the box.

After 4 weeks of tinkering with it this is what became of it.

Got rid of the cheesy aluminum ramrod and went with a hickory rod. Thin down to ramrod thimbles. Thin down forearm. Took the hump out of the stock comb. Put in a couple carvings, then finished it with a poor attempt at antiquing.

The kit was cheap enough so it was done....just because!

You made a nice little rifle even nicer. Years ago when I bought mine they came with a wood ramrod that worked just fine. And they are evermore accurate.

Thanks for the kind words. I seen these kits at Shot Show in Vegas last month and had to have one. Wanted a flinter but the guys in the Traditions booth said not going to happen. This is the only percussion I own but glad I got one.

Our squirrel season goes out this Thursday and hopefully I’ll get one hunt in with it.

hanshi, If I may, what was your pet load for you Crockett? I was going to start with 30gr. of FFFg, Hornady .310 RB and a .10 patch with TOW mink Oil.

Digger, You did a great job on the kit.

30 grs. of 3F is a fine starting point but I ended up closer to 20 grs. for best accuracy in my Crockett. I use a .310 ball with a .015 patch lubed with Hoppe's 9 Plus. The Crockett is very accurate and has the added benefit of getting a LOT of shots from a pound of powder.

That is really nice. I have a factory rifle but your stock is much better. Would you share your finishing method?? I could easily be persuaded to scrape off the factory finish and try for yours.

Nice. I like the finish on your over the stock finish that comes with the built Rifle.

Got mine last week and started breaking in the barrel.
Started with 20g FFFG and .311 balls from a lee mold. Groups were not very good but my patch may not be thick enough.
Seemed to do better with 30gr FFFG with a lubed over powder wad
I have to take more range trips to sort it out.

That's a nice looking rifle. I wish I had the time a patience for building something like that.

I built a cap and ball revolver and an 1863 Springfield from some kits once. Never again.

You have a right to be proud of that little work of art.

Does anyone have any information of Ardesa production? These Crockett rifles seem to have vanished from the European market entirely over the last year.

BTW they have been converted to flintlock but it involves some major cutting and drilling.

I like it, nice job the Crockett was the first kit I built I am not pleased with the beach wood stock but it will do, it sure shoot nice. I didn't like the 2 brass washers so I made and inletted a side plate similar to a Springfield musket that I have nothing fancy but I like it better then the brass washers.

I plan to replace the two washers also.
But, isn't that one upside down ? ?

I think you did a nice job of installing the side plate, but I am with Crankshaft in thinking the Crockett side plate was installed upside down.
