Personally I find that crossbody upper arm hold very comfortable and naturally steady. To a point I use the same hold with my flat butt guns

I saw this posted in the Tennessee Mountain gun thread. I have heard of this but never seen it used, Can someone explain or post a picture of this method.

It is related to how one fires the butt style of a Southern Mountain Rifle (smr). The butt is cupped and placed in the notch of the upper arm just before the shoulder. One stands with their off-hand side facing the target with the Rifle running along the chest (close to the body). The bottom of the butt fits under the armpit, sort of locking the gun in. I'll see if I can find the link to Bob McBride video.

After thinking about shooting for a while I came to the realization that I shoot crescent-butt plate rifles with an "exaggerated" turn of the torso. I do the same thing with other rifles with some fired with slightly less body turn. What got me to that realization is the fact I will often rest the off hand elbow on my left hip bone when shooting.

ISSF National Coach Course: Rifle Shooting, Shooting Positions

Contains detailed pictures and excellent descriptions of this type of stance beginning on p. 51. Very detailed description focusing on critical points beginning on p. 59. Probably much more detail than most people here may want. It doesn't address any traditional BP rifle issues such as placing the butt on the upper arm, but it sure nails the stance.

Hey has anyone heard from Bob? Hope he’s ok. I miss he’s videos

Anthony

Doing good Anthony, thanks for asking, just trying to get back on my feet after that nasty surgery. Starting to feel myself after all this time. Glad y’all liked the SMR video. They’re a treat to shoot offhand.

Good article. I have lost some flexibility, and shoulder problems make it difficult to rest my arm against my side. I cross-shoot my SMR by placing the butt on the upper part of my bicep. My supporting arm is at the balance point of the stock.

there are many other things and people in far far worse places than me. just irritates me that i am not the man i used to be! wait , maybe i am! never could shoot great!!!
That's true. At least I woke up this morning. If I wake up tomorrow. I'll be happy. If I'm able to go fishing. I'll be happier!
