Crossfire Question

Without getting into a crossfire cause debate, for those that put something over the ball, has anyone tried the "Wonder Seals"? I am looking at the ones by Ox-Yoke and seem to be reasonably priced at $9.99/100 from TOTW. Not the "Wonder Lube Wads" -- the Seals.
Seems it would make things a mite simpler and cleaner but would /do they have any detrimental effect on accuracy, etc.

They are basically the same thing. I think the wads are lubed, seals not. I use either. I put powder, wad, ball. Works for me. I do put a tiny tiny dab of TC bore butter on top of ball every other cylinder to keep fouling soft but that’s about all.
Some like use crisco, tallow, bear shat. I aint into all that mess. I like the wads.
PS. Want accurate, get a rifle. Revolvers are for short range killin’.

The seals look different from the prelubed wads which I have and use ...sometimes. The seals look almost like a lube cookie

So i was kidding. But seriously. I use the oxyoke lubed wads. They help reduce fouling which i am told increases accuracy. Seals are same but dry which frankly I dont see much purpose for. Ive read that lubed wads can cause the powder to wet and misfire. I have not had that happen.
Maybe if put on top of powder for long time , i don’t leave mine loaded.
Call TOTW. they can tell the difference. I never seen much difference.

I like the Bearshat idea. I am playing with wads and no wads and have not seen a discernible difference accuracy wise, but also am still working on the accurate part. But I am still getting my setup down. Picked up a pistol rest the other day. Definite improvement over the cobbled up rest I was using that was a range wood block rest atop a pistol case.

You need the best steady rest you can get to check for accuracy. Skill wise free hand shooting is it but my days of doing that well are behind me. Take what I can get.

I for sure use the wads when I am trying .451 ball. No matter you view on Chainfires, that is getting into the iffy seal range size wise.

I have also put lubed wads in front of the .451 balls as a damper. I take the wad out and shoot one chamber at a time without that wad up front.

Not scientific but they use fine mesh screen as a flash suppressor on explosive mixtures. Looking at the wads you can see the tracks of burning powder on the front of them, have not seen it do more than the front surface , nothing is getting through to the back.

From what I am seeing I don't see a need for grease up front, if the ball has any seal, a flash getting behind a wad (assuming its between the ball and the powder) would seem to be virtually impossible.

Regarding the grease up front. When i go range I shoot around 75 to 100 balls. When i first started going about a year ago i didn’t use grease. Needed to swab/clean about every 6 cylinders.
Per local gunsmith i bought a tube of TC Bore Butter. By adding a little dab on top of a cylinder every other cylinder, by fall/end of shooting season, i was shooting 75 rounds with zero cleaning. I do believe now that it reduces fouling. As they say, YMMV.
PS. I dont tend to use when really hot out. Makes a greasy mess all over pistol. Temp below 80, ya i use.

I have been putting a dab of toilet seal ring wax above the ball. It stays put and doesn't seem to cause any trouble. I don't shoot well enough to have an opinion on accuracy.

The seals OP referred to are lube cookies designed to be used over the bullet or ball. I tried them but they’re too expensive for what they are . Now if I use lube over a ball I just scoop up a small ball of lube with a popsicle stick, stick it on the ball and smash it down.

I use homemade wads cut from Duracell or leftover wool from old wool blanket projects. I punch them out with a cheap Harbor Freight punch. Mine, lubed with a melted mix of lard, bees wax and parafin. Lamb’s tallow was recommended in the recipe I found years ago but I didn’t have access to any. They seem to work well either between the ball and powder or over the ball. I wouldn’t use them over powder in warm weather if the gun was going to stay loaded for an extended time due to possible powder contamination.
