has anyone done this and would it help to dry it faster....i went on a iron hunt yesterday and found some good stuff....some cut nails, old wire fence (not barb wire), some flat stuff, bunch of nails that were really rusted to where they were flakeing and an old cast iron pipe....it was all rusted and looks good but i have found no barb wire yet....will the alcohol thin it to much to where it will take away the color of the stain after it was done brewing....has anyone tried this yet and what were yore outcome....pictures will be much help if ya have any  ....and what is a good amount to start with to do a full stock #example pint or half pint..............bob

Have not cut with Alcohol, I am sure it would have an impact on the color of the solution. Vinegar stain drys very quickly as it is. The full stock I just completed only took 2-3 ozs. I start with 1-2 cups of vineger and enough metel to dissolve in 4-6 weeks. Vineger is a mild acid and it does take some time to disolve the iron (especially when compared to Nitric Acid.) I did dilute with Hydrogen Peroxide to change the shade, but you have to use it fast as the peroxide disappears quickly.

Bob1961,
If the reason you want to add the alcohol is to get a faster drying time, then dont bother, it dries very fast...
When I made my brew I started with a quart, It seemed to evaporate some, I had a muslin cloth over it. so I ended up with about 3/4 of a quart and it didnt take much...I still have a good 1/2 quart. I let mine brew for just about a month before I used it.. I am very please with the results...sounds like some of the rusty flaky nails are a good place to start... I dont think you HAVE to have barbed wire, just rust:> I have read where some people use different things (ie: steel wool, nails) to get different colors...so maybe start two jars... and see what you come up with :) let the mad scientist take over :winking:

i'll have bout 6 stains going to see what does what....i have enough pieces of cut offs from my stock when made to try it on and have a bunch left over to make some knife handles and bullet blocks and other stuff....my barrel should be here in a couple of weeks from to git started on everything....thanks........bob
