I have a 50 cal percussion CVA Mountain rifle c. 1970s? no other markings on gun but Connecticut Valley Arms, Black powder Only 50 cal. No proofs no country of origin. Is it Spanish made or USA. Wood appears to be maple but lock appears to be foreign. Any thoughts. SN #0101760.

I here the early cva had 2 wedge pins to hold the barrel to the stock and 4 screws for the patch box if you have the above it was made in the usa and would have a douglas barrel 1 in 66 twist

The lock & trigger are spanish & the wood on stock wood is generally Beech. In the ads back then it was referred to as American Hardwood.

It is probably a spanish made barrel. The U.S. Douglas barrels have "Made in U.S.A" stamped on the barrel. At least mine does.

The Douglas barrels also had six sided ramrod ferrels rather than the later round. The capbox on these rifles had four screws rather than two. Though I have heard that some of the USA barrels had two screw patch boxes.

can anyone give fact to the ferrules???
I have the 4 screw patch box, douglas "Made in USA" barrel, early kit gun, ect, all pointing to usa gun, but have round non-blued ferrels.
just curious, its not for sale, I like it, it shoots great, all else really dont mean diddly squat!

would be nice to see a bio on these and all variations, since I can come up with about 12 variations thus far from reading this forum for over a year!

...curious,
Brett

I have one brand new never shot yet in cap,it says USA on barrel, and a flinter that just has CVA on barrel. I bought the cap one off E-Bay for 150.00 and had to buy 150.00 worth of parts he had lost in 30yrs, have it done except the finish. I got the parts before CVA went out of them. I had to make a sear spring for the flinter, as the one they sent only fits the newer ones. I used a small hose clamp. Log Cabin Supply will tell you, they been in the business 60 some yrs that all the parts were made in Spain. Mine are 50.cal. Have a 45 Kentucky that I put together. Plus a the 32 squirrel rifle. I kill lot of small game with it. Kill a grhog graveyard dead with 20grs and RB. You can't get the 6sided thimbles now, they sent me rounds ones. Dilly

You can't get them, they sent me rounds one, said didn't have them. Also don't have the oringal trigger guards, but he sent me one that worked. I got these about year ago. Don't think you will get much now. From what Log Cabin Supply told me what CVA did before having them made in Spain, was they got the parts from Spain and put them together here and marked them USA. Log Cabin one off the oldest in State, their dad started it 60yrs or more. They call these new guys johnny come lately. They could be right. Dilly

Mine is well under number 250, and this is the ramrod thimble shape.

My flinter has those, I couldn't get them for my cap lock. Both have the 4 screw patchbox. I got anew lock for the cap,it was 60.00. The guy had the kentucky lock on the Mt rifle and I didn't check the screws and bought the kentucky lock for 38.00 to find out it was on the Mt rifle. It fit in stock, but screw holes don't jibe. He also had nose cap with Mt rifle. I got the two guns off same guy. He had got them back in 70's. Never put them together. The flinter I got for 100.00 at Rogers Flea Market. I also go the 32 squirrel rifle there for 115.00,cap. My buddy had one in a flinter 45. Dilly

There are serial numbers on all of them. Mine has the serial number on the side away from the lock about an inch forward of the breech on the same flat as the CVA info.

Brett, It wouldn't suprise me a bit to see a mix of parts during a transitional period. The maker has a lot of Douglas barrels left and starts getting different parts from Spain. You might see a mix when during a change over.

When I restocked mine I switched out the hexagonal ramrod pipes for round. I used a round entry thimble on the Leman stock I was using and used round to match the new entry thimble. I think I still have the hexagonal thimbles and buttplate around somewhere.

Mike,
good info. do have or know anyone who has, a list of sorts as to serial #s/year of mfg? mine was definatly a kit and am curios. sure as heck shoots great!

Brett

That is a real douglas barrel. I have often traded two for one for spanish bbl rifles made immediately after. I f your bbl says made in usa, and a few omoitted this logo it is a douglas bbl.

I don't have a list of serial numbers but do remember seeing something like that about a year go on the forum. Try a search on "Mountain Rifle" on the forum and you might turn up something.
