Put this together from various sources. The Barrel is from Deer Creek, .50 cal marked only, supposedly the old Douglas supplied. Nothing special about the stock, but the finish came out good. Had to install a toe plate to take care of a chip. Shoots like a charm.

Hi Rob,

you did a nice job on building that rifle! How did you get the stock so nice finished?
What is your favorite load for the rifle?

Regards

I've always thought that the Mountain rifle was one of the most handsome muzzleloaders ever produced. Your a lucky man to own one.

Great Job. That sure looks alot like the Deer Creek rifle I have. I have a 54 Cal. The lock looks like it comes to a point on yours. Which was the way the CVA lock were. Mine also is a CVA lock, but my understanding is that Deer Creek rounded the rear of the locks and did a few changes after buying most of CVA's supplies. They put a pewter nose cap on there rifles. My stock is curly maple. Mine was a kit. Those Douglas barrels are real shooter. Looks good.

P.S. I had mine on this photo forum month or so earlier. Not sure if its still here.

I like the toe plate you chose. Good job on inletting that. I think it looks great. I too, like the finish on the stock. Is the wood walnut or the beech we see on the Traditions rifles?

A friend of mine made the toe plate, and actually, the inletting is not that great but thanks anyway. The rear sight is the buckhorn, screw adjustable sight that was supplied on the CVA mountain rifles. I slimmed down the stock from the lock and side plates back through the wrist. Water based Black Cherry stain, rubbed BLO and then paste wax. It is the Beech and this stock really has no distinguishable features. Some of the beech stocks have nice grain features.65 grains ffg,.490 ball and pillowtick patch. Shoots great, balances well, excellent sight picture.

Nice lookin Hawkin! Those 2 wedges and 2 lock bolts give the feeling of real quality and extra sturdiness that you don't get from other production hawkens
