With just getting started in the ML world and seeing everything stating how well PRBs work in this rifle, I am wondering if anyone has luck using Maxi balls?

Living in AK, I am hoping to use as a hunting rifle for moose and could use the extra weight. If not, I'll just have to see what I can make happen.

Lyman Great Plains Rifles have basically the same twist and maxi-balls & Lee R.E.A.L. bullets shot great in mine.

If that rifle has anything close to a 1:48 twist in the barrel, give the Hornady 385 gn "Great Plains" bullet a try.
In my T/C that one easily outperforms the Maxiball.
My load is 90 gns 2f Goex.
ONE hole groups off a rest at 50 yds and it HAMMERS hogs and Whitetail. It would definitely be my choice for Moose.

If the rifling in the CVA has shallow grooves it should work ok. If the grooves are.010" or so try an over powder wad to make the seal. If accuracy non obtainable, well been lotsa moose killed w w .50 PRB.

I have try the Lee real bullet in 250gr for my45mountain rifle with 70gr of ff and it's OK don't know about50cal because I use round ball in my

Moose er big and can also be mean (so I hear). I wouldn't shoot one with any round ball under .58 myself. I would be hesitant to use the .50 conical too. I have however shot big bull elk with .50 great plains conical and the two I used those on were down within sight. The on the hoof weight for these were near 850 lbs. Moose er ALOT bigger. PLUS in AK (per my sister who lives in Fairbanks and is "almost" far enough away) when ya hunt moose you likely got bear and I would NOT shoot a griz with a .50 anything. Just my opinion....

Like your sis, I too live in AK. When hunting with anything up here I carry BIG back up. As for shooting moose, many modern rifles use less then 200 grain projectiles. They use speed, not size. I have used a bow to harvest moose so why not a 180 grain ball (very close of course, less then 60 yards)

The Mountain Rifle has a 1:33 barrel for round ball. So the answer is give them a try. You want the banded style of maxi ball and not the more straight sided "Cross hatch " pattern. Those can be a real bear to load.

slight correction, the Mountain Rifle has a 1 in 66 twist barrel.

My first ML rifle was an early CVA Mtn Rifle. They were advertised 1-66" twist, and supposedly wouldn't shoot a 370gr Maxi accurately. Silly teenager me didn't know that, and I found they shot as well as PRBs over pretty stiff charges of fffg.
