I was given a .50cal made is USA marked CVA mtn rifle by my dad, it came to him second hand and had a lightly putted but shootable bore. He was trying to replace a .45cal Mtn rifle he had back in the early 80s but this thing was too abusive. I shot it at a few woods walks and hunted with it before getting involved with teenager stuff in the late 90s and it languished for 15 years in his safe before he gifted it to me. Well I remembered it used to smack me in the cheek bone so before doing anything I shaved the comb and gave it some cast off, took it out and boom, smack! Shot two shots and nursed a bruised cheek and busted out the shinto rasp and went nuts. Thismorning I took it out with good results all around, just have to whisker the grain, stain and seal it up. Its gonna get a little more love tban it has in recent history.

After you get it re-stained and finished, you can gift it back to your Dad to thank him for the travails he had to put up with while raising you.

And don't tell me you didn't cause him any grief. I know, I have 2 kids in their 30s. :haha:

My wife has A pedersoli Cub , with the Roman nose cheek slapper Stock. It doesn`t Cheek slap her but puts a beating on mine!!It is super accurate and I would love to Rasp the Nose of It. But, It Is hers...not Mine !!

You might be able to get away with it with a shoulder pad, just something to lengthen the pull on it. But some guns are just unfriendly, one more reason to shoot before you buy if at all possible.

True "cast off" is actually cutting out the stock shape to be off-center if you ran a line from muzzle back along the gun's top side through to the butt plate. This Gave an advantage of eye alignment along the gun's barrel axis. Could also be done for shooters who were, say, right handed but left eye dominant. You can see actual stock shaped "cast off" in this view of a fowler.

KH used the thinning of a side of the butt to do an abbreviated version for better fit.

Yes, it looks great - but what did you do to get it that way?

Not enough info on the finishing......

I stained it with some minwax stain that was in the clearance rack at Lowes, after a couple applications I then used some old Tru Oil I'd thinned it down with some denatured alcohol, and added some of the dark stain to the mix. After about 6 coats of that I used some Laurel Mtn Forge stock sealer over the whole stock. I suspect the stock had been sealed originally because I couldn't get very good penetration of the stain and while it doesn't show up well in the photos, it is a shade or two darker where the original stain is. With that said it is a much more comfortable rifle to shoot, and it was and shall remain a utility rifle and not a collectors piece.
