I need to shim a CVA Powder Drum to make the nipple line up properly. My question is, should I shim it on the outside between the barrel and drum? Or should I shim down in the hole where the nose of the drum seats? It would seem that if I shim the outside it would leave a small gap at the drum inner nose. That don't sound like a good thing. Any advise on these things? I've not seen a drum made like this one before. This is on an old Kentucky Pistol Kit I'm working on.

looking at my spare cva drum, the threads are tapered, like that of pipe threads. I would gander to say that there is nothing inside to shim against. a thin spacer on the outside, diameter to match the drum, should be fine, IMHO.

I had to shim a Traditions once. Shimming it on the outside works fine. There's also the option of getting an undrilled drum from TOW and drilling it in the right location. Not that expensive, nor very hard, and it's done right that way.

This one is like a banjo bolt. Its hollow and goes all the way thru into the other side of the barrel. Then it has a hole drilled into the side of the threaded portion which has to line up with the bore correctly. Does anyone know if Track carries these? I looked on the website, but no pictures. I have the drilling jig for drums. The drum I have is off by about a quarter turn. Some shim stock should put it rite-on.

Blue Locktite isn't a bad idea. Or maybe some JB Weld on the inner lip of the drum... hmmmm. I brought my feeler guage home tonight and the gap measures .012. I have to go into town tomorrow to get taxes done and I think I'll hit some shops to see if I can find some shims. I'm thinking about trying to get 12, .002 shims, .500 OD, .390 ID. I'm dreaming, right? Anyways, If I can't find suitable shim stock I may have to try one of these solutions.
