I actually got out and worked on the fowler this morning. finished inletting the lock. After that was put to bed I started cleaning up the butt plate.
got the rough edges knocked down and started to sand the thing. Have I ever mentioned that i detest metal polishing? decided that was enough achievement for the day and got out my birch stocked .54 flinter.
Fed it 60g of fffg garnished with a .018 bear fat lubed patch and a .530 ball.
It coughed up a 10 shot chorus of notes on my 6x8 gong at 50 yards.
this rifle is the one I refer to as the ugly duckling. It was an attempt at a full stock flintlock Hawken.
It shoots amazingly. so well i don't use double grocery bags to hide it anymore!

Dip-lubing .44 cal conicals:

I've found that pre-dip-lubing .44 cal conicals prior to loading into paper cartridges can be problematic because dip-lubing tends to result in excess lube over the entire bottom end of the bullet that's supposed to get seated into the paper cartridge, but lube and glue together are not very happy campers. I discovered that an empty .45 ACP casing works really well to strip the excess lube from around the circumference of the bullet, leaving the lube in the grooves untouched, and then with just a little extra manual wiping here and there, results in a conical bullet with a relatively clean base that should glue fairly well into a paper cartridge casing:

Shot my fowler yesterday!! It was a dream!! Need to file the front sigh down but I figured out where the hold needs to be!!
I found my hold point to be the base of the front sight so I didn’t file my sight besides I think it looks good just the way it is .The more you shoot it the more you’ll want to shoot that’s all I shoot any more they’re a blast to shoot . Good luck with your new gun shoot it often and shoot it lots .😉

Over the weekend assembled the R E Davis Jaeger double-set trigger kit that finally came in stock at Track... had been on backorder forever it seemed like. Trigger plate cleaned up ok with a good bit of filing, it had a pretty good void on the right front edge. Got it all together except for the set trigger adjustment screw... didn't have a #3-48 tap.
The set trigger sear tip area was pretty rough, so today cleaned up the sear engagement surfaces and sides of triggers and did some general finish sanding/polishing. Instructions call for approx. 1/32" sear engagement; that's pretty close. Next to polish triggers a little more and heat treat sear areas. Not a difficult project. Hopefully I'll get the Jaeger started to accept the trigger one day.

today...monday...almost 2025...finished the brass wedge plates...working on the cva mountain repair...bedded the junk gemmer stock...and drive out the pin on the junk gemmer stock's nose cap...glued the cap back on...it was rocking with the pin as pivot...just another problem with the kit. no picks

on the second front- cut off the chamber for the .22's and draw filed the flats on a very old remington barrel. i'll bore the barrel out to .375 cut it in half...and make pistol barrels. i'll have to build another rifling bench...not something i haven't done before..
