i have cva cap lock rifle with the set trigger. my problem is the hammer will not stay cocked. untill i pull the set trigger then **** the rifle. I have tried the ajuster screw. and taken the lock out but thats to my abilities. Any ideas?

thanks

Sounds like the rear trigger bar is riding against the sear causing the sear to not engauge in the full **** notch of the tumbler.

The tang screw is threaded into the front of the trigger plate and a wood screw should secure it at the rear of the trigger plate. Place small washers between the trigger plate and the stock to act as spacers . Put the screws through the washers. This may eliminate your problem. It may take more than one washer under each screw.

My brother had the same problem with his and loosening the tang screw fixed it. Not the greatest fix, but cva,s aren't the best rifles made. Great barrels though. Bill

What Mr. Flintlock said, Sometimes if the trigger is inlet to deep the trigger bar will ride against the sear. If yours is a kit rifle it my have been inlet to deeply.......... I wonder how i know this will happen? :shake:  Mine would only stay cocked if i set the set trigger prior to cocking. Not the same as you described but something to consider.

On two CVA frontier rifles I own, both had the same problem. previous owners had tried hogging out lock mortises and trigger inlets. Simple shim washers between the stock and the trigger plate did the trick

When the trigger plate is installed correctly, both triggers should have a small amount of shake (forward to aft) when the lock is at full **** with the rear set trigger left unset.

If someone overtightened the tang screw or deepened the mortice for the trigger plate it, (the trigger plate) will be installed too deeply into the wood.

This causes the trigger blade(s) to push up on the lock sear arm which prevents the sear nose from fully engaging the full **** notch in the tumbler.

As the others suggested, shimming the trigger plate so it cannot go as deeply into the stock will usually fix it.

Another way of fixing it is to take a flat file and remove a little from the top of both the front triggers and the rear triggers blade top. (The part that pushes up against the sear arm to release it.)

well i took it apart played with things. now it works  woohoo i supose.
thanks

If you are not sure what fixed it.....it might not be fixed. :idunno: Try to push forward on the hammer at full ****. Sometimes the hammer/**** will stay back but not be fully engaged in the notch in the tumbler. This could result in a dangerous situation. :shocked2: :v As Zonie said filing the tops down on the triggers will correct the problem as well,I've done both file down the tops and shim the trigger plate to correct this problem before.

Been said a bunch of times.
I have a CVA MR, the front of the trigger mortise was in bad shape likley from folks over tightening the screw (tang screw).
I got elabrate and bedded the area with epoxy useing a small brass tube to create the hole for the screw through the stock. I had to clean all the crushed/bad wood out of there first.
Glad to hear ya got it working, but while leaving the screw just a little loose will work, your shot to shot accuracy might suffer because the barrel isn't tight. :2

I have a couple of squirrel rifles and a couple of mountain rifles. I have noticed that CVA filed the triggers down to clear on one of the squirrels, but the other kit did not have the filing. I filed it and life was good. Now to finish those...
