Looks like you would get powder burns 100 yards away. Preaty impresive. F.K.

Actually, the basic Parrot or Napolean cannon firing blank loads can be deadly at 25 yds and dangerous at 50 yds. Not only does flame [and intense heat] and pressure wave blow out the front, so do 'cinders' of powder. Experiments have shown that dummies placed out at 50 yds were peppered with these cinders which penetrated the 'skin'. In one reenactment a horse's tail was 'blown'[burnt?] off when it passed 25-50 yds in front as the gun went off. I know one man who lost his hand to a blank load and fatalities are not unknown. Cannon shooting is no game, but a serious business, and safety precautions/training is essential for all crews...

I wonder if they are shooting steel wool in those photos. A good sized wad of it will really liven up the night. I've even used it in my rifle when shooting at night. It will throw flame and sparks WAAAAAY out there. I've been meaqning to try some brass woll too. I'm thinking that it should give me a blue/green flame.

WOW!! Check out the back pressure comming out of the flash hole!!

Guess a flash suppressor wouldn't work!

Thanks for sharring,

Dave

never point your cannon at anything that you don't want to destroy
keep your torch away from the touch hole until you are ready to fire
keep you cannon unloaded until ready to fire
