I remember when I was a kid I wanted to learn to be a gun smith. That was not something my folks could see me doing and I was gently directed to other pursuits.

Its not too late to start. I waited years to get into a Machine Tool Technology school and have enjoyed metalwork ever since.

I have two younger sisters and encouraged them to pursue anything they found interesting, including shooting. Now they can both out shoot me. When they want to learn something new I tell them "You can do it"...because I know they can.

When we decided that we needed to get a lead thrower I lobied hard for black powder. My reasoning being that the average criminal type is not going to know how to use my gun against me. Those who know how to shoot them tend to be more togather than other folks.
Now if I could just get Sevan (my spouse) to learn how to shoot. Seems the reasoning is that because I have the skill already there is no need for the bother...
Yes I do know how utterly stupid that reasoning is and trying to get past it has caused a fight in the past, so I have given up on that war.

for what it's worth, i'm out here in a pretty rural (for me anyway) part of the country. the post office doesn't bring my mail to the house (too remote) and it wasn't until it became an election issue that there was a push to get internet service to everyone, so for many years we had no DSL, just dial- up, and we still don't have cell phone service.

imagine, if you will, that a newcomer hears the distinctive sound of glass being broken or a door being jimmied ... being a good little sarahbrady type, they'll call the police. you will read about this fellow...

in the obituary

'cause the nearest police coverage where i live is about forty five minutes away, and that assumes that they're not already doing something else. my wife and i taught both the kids how to do the basics, but neither really 'caught the bug.' perhaps when time or finances permit, but for now, they'll at least know how to use it.

i suppose that the subtext here is that you can open the door, but you can't make them go through it.

It would take a minimum of 20-30 minutes to get law enforcement out here if you call them. More likely an hour or longer. Add to that there is no animal control in these parts...not haveing some form of fire arm (and knowing how to use it properly!) is just silly.
