I was given a Damascus blank to forge into knives on the forge. I have forged one blade. I understand that it is necessary to bring out the colors on the finished blade with an acid. What type of acid is used for this process?

well now that depends, most any caustic solution will do starting with plain old Clorox .
I have use battery acid with good results . Bill Brockway says he used computer etching solutions with great results .
The basic steps are to polish up the Damascus to a smooth finish and then either warm up the item and add acid or dip it into a acidic solution and then let brown

Radio Shack sells something called Archer Etchant...
It's ferric chloride ..
This is the stuff a lot of us use to bring out the contrast of the steels in Damascus...
You can even block off areas with fingernail polish, vaseline, etc. that you don't want to etch..
This stuff works great... :imo:  :m2c:
be well ....

If you use the Etching Solution from Radio Shack, DO NOT get it on anything ya like as it will stain it yellow/brown, including concrete & it will not come off. Also mix it as directed as it doesn't work like ya thing. You would thing stronger solution works better but it don't. I think it is 4-5-6 to 1 or something like that & woeks great that way.
Ya don't have to heat the blade or anything, just finish the blade to the desired metal finish, dip it in the solution & leave it there for a while, take it out & rinse it off, doo it again & etc. til the desired amount of etching is acquired. Rinse well after etching in HOT water & pat dry. (NOT on your wifes best towels......)
Then take some 600 paper on a block of wood & sand the blade & you have it cleaned. Now put some good gun oil on it & you are done. Plan on your fingers being stained black for a few days as it gets in the cracks of your hands & will not come off.

NOTE: The etching solution is Poison, so keep it put away form kids & animals!
