Here is an item like you have not seen before and will not see again. This cased flintlock pistol with accessories was completely handmade in the shop of Al Osterman by his son Daniel E. Osterman in 1971. Daniels name appears on the lockplate and the date 1971 is on the interior of the plate. The story goes that this set was made as a gift to the man who taught Daniel to engrave. The case is quarter sawn oak french fitted with red velvet. The pistol is .45cal with 8 lands and grooves 9" long and tapering from .775 at the breech to .625 at the muzzle. The stock is highly figured what appears to me to be walnut with a flawless finish. The lock is of an English pattern with waterproof pan, roller frizzen and perfect geometry and is case hardened in colors and throws a nice shower of sparks right into the pan. The trigger is ornate, unset but has a feather spring that keeps it in constant contact with the sear bar for no pre travel. Trigger pull is crisp at 3 lbs and no overtravel. The pistol is light in the hand with the balance point just forward of the trigger guard almost like an early English dueling pistol. The pistol is in unfired condition but the frizzen has been struck. Accessories include a bullet mold, loading rod and cleaning rod.
For those on the early side of 50 Al Osterman, whose shop was in Oregon, became widely known in the 1950s through the mid 70s for makeing ultra high quaity muzzle loading firearms. Daniel went into business with his father. In the mid 70s they built a cannon for a customer who allowed his sons to fire it unsupervised and one of them became blind from looking into the touch hole when the cannon fired. Defending themselves in the lawsuit effectively put both Ostermans out of the gun business. Al went on to become known for making fully operational minerature machine tools. Daniel became noted for museum quality minerature firearms and knives. Daniel passed in 2004 from an unexpected cardiac event and Al passed in 2016.
Price is $1275 which includes shipping anywhere in the US it is legal to ship to. I prefer USPS money order but personal checks are OK with time to clear.
